mens zippered fleece jacket:Softshell Outer Layers
The key with softshells is that they’re designed for wind resistance, although there is a huge variety of choice when it comes to these garments– they’re a lot more breathable than hardshells, but they vary in terms of their construction. For example, the Fitzroy (returning Summer 17/18) and Cargill jackets (mens and womens) have added stretch, making them easier to move around in, and therefore more suitable for higher intensity activities than more rigid softshells such as the Sabre which is better for hiking and walking in cold climates. In general, softshells will provide protection from the wind and light rain, and some have a soft fleece inner for extra warmth.
When to wear it: Apart from in situations where you’re likely to run into heavy rain, there’s a softshell for most outdoor activities. It all comes down to how much movement you’re likely to be doing, and how much protection you think you’ll need from the elements. Although all softshells offer some protection from the elements, the level of this can vary, depending on whether it is constructed with a waterproof membrane. If the jacket has a membrane, it’s likely to be slightly heavier than a jacket without one, but it will provide a greater level of weather protection. Without a membrane, a softshell is generally more lightweight, and easier to move around in, and more breathable, making it better for high intensity pursuits.
