ultralight down sweater:Tom Hardy – The Invisible Fashion Icon
Tom Hardy currently stands as one of the most famous, loved and iconic movie stars of the modern era, having starring as some equally memorable and distinctive characters. So naturally when his fashion sense is brought into conversation, like most actors and actresses it’s sometimes difficult to distinguish the difference between his real-life style and roles he’s played. As for Hardy, he’s noted in the fashion world as a casual but trendy kind of icon. For this piece, I’ve brought together a selection of images of Hardy in his own attire.
TOM HARDY 1In this first picture (left), Hardy is demonstrating one of the biggest crimes in fashion – double denim. Blue jeans with a matching blue denim jacket shouldn’t work, and has often been crucified amongst the fashion industry. However, is it just the nature of this actor or does he really make the outfit look cool?
He continues to dress how he pleases and his own style shows that he doesn’t feel the need to dress up for cameras and the press – unlike other fashion icons such as Kanye West or Beyoncé who have their own clothing lines and try by all means not to be pictured in clothing other than that designed by their own collection or other famous designers. Despite his celebrity status, not being a fashion designer opens the opportunity for Hardy to dress himself accordingly to what he pleases, rather than what we expect of one of the world’s current top actors.
In the image to the below, the premier to The Revenant gave Hardy the opportunity to showcase his smart collection at one of the biggest film premiers of the year, particularly important given the list of Academy Award nominations the film received (and in fact won). His simple suit has a smart, vintage feel to it, particularly with the addition of the waistcoat and chain. Fellow actor and eventual Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio (for the same film) attended the same premier in what seemed a non-branded and equally simple suit. No frills or waistcoats were visible on him, instead a simple black suit you’d expect off an A-Lister.

Southampton Solent Fashion Design student, Claudia Roberts, said of Tom Hardy “He’s stylish and follows trends some of the time, but also looks comfortable; I can’t tell if they’re branded clothes just by the pictures we see of him but you’d presume they are.” From this we can evaluate Hardy’s approach to fashion as ‘laid back’. Simple but effective, which isn’t necessarily what grabs the spotlight nowadays in the media; but then again given that he’s a world-famous actor, it’s only justified that we should be talking about his acting talents rather than his personal dress sense. His style adds a subtle aura of confidence and I very much admire Hardy’s attire. I also have a few clothing items very similar to what he’s been pictured in; the everyday style-guy look is very appealing and underrated in the public eye.
